Use Cases
Real-world implementation of FAIR Digital Objects across three research domains
Cross-Domain Use Cases
The three CDIF4EOSC use cases enable real-world implementation and adoption of FAIR Digital Objects and CDIF4EOSC services across diverse research domains.
Capture user requirements and map domain-specific needs to ensure relevance and interoperability across research communities.
Develop, prototype and integrate solutions based on FAIR Digital Objects and CDIF4EOSC services within targeted research environments.
Demonstrate, validate and evaluate the implemented solutions through real-world use cases, assessing their performance, usability and impact.
Use Case 01
Ocean Sciences
Lead: NOC-BODC
Consolidating marine community standards and using AI to streamline data transfer from scientists to data centres and aggregators (SDN).
The Ocean Sciences use case focuses on the marine research domain, where diverse data types and formats are produced across international research programmes. CDIF4EOSC will provide a consolidated framework to align community standards with FAIR principles, using AI-assisted tools to accelerate the ingestion of data into established marine data infrastructure networks.

Social Sciences & Environment
Lead: CESSDA ERIC
Addressing the challenges of integrating diverse datasets that vary in format, sensitivity and vocabulary, by using the CDIF4EOSC Playbook to reduce data wrangling.
Social Sciences & Environment researchers face significant challenges when integrating datasets from multiple national and thematic archives. This use case applies the CDIF4EOSC Playbook to automate the alignment of metadata schemas, handle sensitive data according to governance requirements, and create interoperable cross-domain datasets ready for analysis.

Safe & Sustainable by Design (SSbD)
Lead: NOC-BODC
Consolidating fragmented community standards and best practices into the CDIF4EOSC Playbook and improving documentation on data quality and provenance.
The SSbD use case addresses the chemicals and materials research domain, where data quality and provenance documentation are critical for regulatory compliance. CDIF4EOSC will help harmonise terminology, improve data quality reporting, and enable cross-domain data reuse for sustainable materials assessment.
